What Kind Of Home Needs A Alarm?

The new requirements apply to all homes in Scotland, regardless of age or property type, whether they are old dwellings or new builds that have been extended or refurbished before or after the new requirements come into force;whether rented or privately owned; as long as they are a house, you must install smoke alarms, heat alarms and carbon monoxide alarms in the room.

What is updated in the latest Scottish legislation

The law in Scotland has changed and as of 1 February 2022 every home now needs to have interlinked fire alarms. So you should check your alarm if they complies with the standards - Carbon monoxide detectors: British Kitemark EN 50291-1

There are 2 types of interlinked fire alarms that meet the new rules:

sealed battery alarms – which should be tamper-proof long-life (which can be up to 10 years) batteries. You can fit these alarms yourself.

mains-wired alarms - these are cheaper than tamper proof long-life battery alarms, but should be installed by a qualified electrician. These should be replaced every 10 years.

Both types of alarm are interlinked by radio frequency without the need for WiFi.

If the carbon monoxide alarm is battery operated, it must have a sealed battery for the duration of its lifespan, which may be up to 10 years.

According to The Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Alarm (England) Regulations 2015, landlords in England are required by law to “provide a carbon monoxide detector (CO alarms) in any room used as living accommodation where solid fuel is used .that means housing providers are required by law to install smoke alarms in all social housing, and carbon monoxide alarms must be fitted in social and private rented properties with fixed appliances such as gas boilers or fires.

Do I need to change my alarm

Yes, it's a law that says you have to replace alarms that comply with Scottish legislation. Otherwise you have more to lose.

What will happen if I don't install it

There are property issues involved. If you have a house fire and your home insurance company finds that you are not complying with the new law, then they may refuse to pay. 

Can the batteries be replaced, or is it a new unit in 10 years time?
