On October 31, 2012, a change to the Building Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2012 went into effect. This change required that carbon monoxide alarms be installed in all homes with new fossil fuel appliances.
And on April 27, 2022, the Royal Assent was given to the Private Tenancies Act, which requires carbon monoxide alarms to be installed in privately rented homes and makes landlords responsible for keeping them working.
What you should know about the most recent change:
From April 27, 2022, private landlords will have to install and keep working:
1) Enough smoke alarms and fire alarms to sound an alarm if either is set off.
2) Enough Carbon Monoxide (CO) alarms to warn people if there are dangerous levels of CO in the air.
Tenants must do the following:
1) Take good care of the alarms that have been set up.
2) Fix any damage to the alarms that was done on purpose or by accident.
